Offside

Picture
Offside is the one rule that many get wrong or misunderstand.  I will keep the explanation simple with some interesting exceptions.

There must be 2 players (usually 1 defender and the keeper) between the attacking player without the ball and opposing teams goal line.

To determine the offside offense, we have to ask where is the player when the ball is passed or kicked?

Picture
The example above shows the player with the ball has 2 choices.  To his left is a player in an offside position and to his right is a player onside.

If he passes to the player to his right, then there is no offside offense even with a player in an offside position.  Being in an offside position does not constitute an offside offense because the player was not part of the play or interfere in the play.

The example above shows the player pass to space as his teammate runs onto the ball.  This player is onside because when the ball was passed, he was in an onside position.
The example above shows a pass when his teammate was in an offside position so when the offside player plays the ball the offside offense is called.
Things to know -
     1)  The player in an offside position does not have to touch the ball to be called offside.  He has to, in the opinion
of the Referee, be involved or interfering in the play.
     2) Interfering in the play such as being blocking the line-of-sight of keeper or blocking a player from going to the
          ball are also offside offenses.

Not offside offenses -
     1) Receiving the ball directly from a goal kick.  (unlikely in high school, this is a long kick)
     2) Receiving the ball directly from a throw-in.  (more likely than a goal kick)
     3) Receive an errant pass from the opposing team.
     4) You cannot be offside on your own half of the field.

This play to the left is a play I want to teach and use.  This is a decoy play where I place a player in an obvious offside position during a free kick.

When the ball is kicked my decoy will make no attempt to play the ball and out of the play and everyone else crashes the goal.  The other team will naturally not move believing an offside offense will be called. :)

If I missed anything important, please let me know.
